Right Now – July 2014

It’s been a quiet blogging week for me. I had a really bad sinus infection and felt crappy for most of the week, and I’ve been working on a sewing project that’s kept me away from my computer. The dreary weather is also sapping my motivation to do anything other than lie on the couch. But here’s what I’ve been enjoying lately anyway!

1. I bought Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell a couple of months ago and finally got around to reading it. It was a really sweet YA novel about two teenagers from completely different backgrounds falling in love. It was very innocent in some ways, but beautifully heartbreaking in others. Coincidentally I got Fangirl from the library at the same time and am only a couple of chapters in, but enjoying it so far. Rainbow Rowell is a great writer – apparently she wrote her first novel during NaNoWriMo, which is amazing.

2. Re-Gen oil from Aldi (Yes, ALDI!) is where it’s at right now. I bought this on a whim a few months ago while doing the weekly grocery shop because I’d heard about the wonders of Bio Oil fading skin discolourations and marks, so I thought I’d give it a try. In the last months of my pregnancy and in the months after I had my daughter, I got a spot about the size of a 5 cent piece on my ribcage that looked like a strawberry birthmark. Since it first appeared, it increased steadily in size until it was the size of about two 50 cent pieces smooshed together. I saw the Re-Gen oil and it was about….$6 I think? Anyway, I decided to give it a shot. I rubbed the oil on it every second or third day after my shower (or basically anytime I could remember to do it, which is probably more accurate). That spot is now 100% gone. There’s not even a shade of pigmentation where it used to be. Amazing. I’m now slathering it on the stretch marks on my thighs. We’ll see what happens with those stubborn bastards.

3. The Mindy Project is yet another show that has been sitting on my “To Watch” list since it started. I saw season 1 at JB Hi-Fi for $24.95 last week and grabbed it. Since my husband has been working long hours this week, I’ve had a lot of solo TV viewing time, so I blew through season 1 in about four or five days. It. Is. Hilarious. I’d heard good things, and I knew Kaling was a writer for the US version of The Office, so I had incredibly high hopes. I was laughing from episode 1. This is a show everyone needs to watch. I mean, Mindy’s warrior name is Beyonce Pad Thai. She is my kind of people. Hanging out for the season 2 DVD release, which is apparently in August. I will be all over it as soon as I see it on the shelf. ALL OVER IT.

4. Winter means scarves. Or, as my two year old says “Carf! Carf!” I have a lot of scarves, mostly gifts from my sisters who travel a lot. Scarves are obviously easy to buy in bulk for people and shove into the gaps in suitcases for gifts, which I completely appreciate. So I rarely buy scarves for myself. But yesterday I was in Brighton and was walking through the little shopping centre on Church Street on my way to the car park and spotted this orange argyle scarf on a rack out the front of a nice looking jewellery and accessory type shop. There was a sign above it that said $20 and I knew the scarf would be mine before I’d even touched it. I love the bold orange (which is not normally a colour I wear) for these grey days, and argyle is my favourite clothing pattern. It’s gorgeous and I adore it.

So. What’s new with you?
