Beauty – Hydration Needed

I don’t know why I never knew I had normal to dry skin. It just never really dawned on me until a few years ago when I had some microdermabrasion for the first time and the lady mentioned that my skin was quite dry in places. I just though my skin was normal with a bit of flakiness occasionally. It didn’t occur to me that the reason for the flakiness was dry skin. DUH. Ever since then I’ve tried to keep an eye on the dryness level, but I’m still kind of lazy about it.

Last week my moisturiser and my night cream ran out at the same time, so I hit up Strawberry Net to see what new products I could try. Coincidentally, the arrival of Autumn has made my skin, and my lips specifically, drier than ever. There is not enough Vaseline or QV lip balm in the world that I can slather on my lips to quell the dryness factor. So when I went online to buy some replacement skin stuff, I typed in “Hydrating” into the search box and used that as my base for choosing a day time moisturiser and a night cream or serum.

For my day time moisturiser I chose this Clarins HydraQuench Lotion SPF15 (Normal to Combination Skin) which was (and still is) on sale for $59.50. I would have preferred an SPF of 20 or 25, but I like the way this feels on my skin – it’s light and it absorbs straight away. I feel like the bottle could be a little bigger to give me a little bit more value for money, but since it’s my first Clarins purchase, I was happy to give it a whirl.

For overnight hydration, I decided to go with a serum rather than a cream. I had been using a Shiseido that was expensive, even when bought on sale on Ozsale, and quite frankly I don’t really think it’s that great. It’s not bad, but it’s not anything special. I had been looking at this Philosophy serum, When Hope is Not Enough Hydrating Antioxidant Serum, in Sephora in Hawaii, but ended up choosing their anti-aging retinoid pads that I thought were fairly decent. So when the serum came up in my search results on Strawberry Net, I thought it was time to try it out. Quite frankly, I LOVE IT. It’s got a delicious smell, sort of like a really clean, fresh cleansing smell, it’s weightless and oil-free, which I love, and it really does feel like it’s hydrating my skin as soon as I rub it in. I don’t think the bottle will last very long, but it’s something that I will keep coming back to I think. I’ve only been using it for a few days, and I can tell that my skin is already feeling less dry than it was. I do still think my skin needs a light night time cream to go over the top of the serum (you know, for wrinkle reasons), but for now I’m enjoying the hydrated, clean feeling this serum gives my skin once I’ve washed off all my make up.

I also have to give huge props to Strawberry Net’s prompt and FREE shipping. Because I ordered over $50 or $75 I got free shipping (I can’t remember which amount gives you free shipping – I’m inclined to think it’s $75), plus I got 5% off my order for being a repeat customer. I ordered these on Tuesday and I got them on THURSDAY, people. TWO DAYS. Phenomenal. Makes me wonder why certain other countries (*coughUSAcough*) can’t follow suit.

Until next time,

You should try Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask – can be a ‘mask’ but really, just rub it in like a moisturiser – and.. it works the wonders. Very affordable here in Aus. I’ve loved it when I’ve noticed extra dryness thanks to more heating on in the office!
